ABRUZZO is a beautiful province on the East coast. This is where 2 very underestimated grapes are grown to their optimum quality. Trebbiano is a hugely produced white variety often used in blending (Orvieto, Soave) and can be very average. Here in Abruzzo it can produce very good white wine. The red grape Montepulciano (D'Abruzzo) is really one of the least known and yet most important varieties in Italy. Montepulciano makes excellent red wine from entry level to fine wine and has excellent taste (cherries/sour cherries) with an ability to match almost all food- including many fish dishes. Montepulciano D'Abruzzo Riserva is not for the feint hearted. This can be big, tannic and powerful. Often drunk in Abruzzo with Bar-B-Que meat, intestines & other strong tasting meat dishes. (Not to be confused with Nobile di Montepulciano- a wine from the town of Montepulciano in Tuscany).
